Basketball Coaching Drills
Basketball coaching drills are team drills that focus on improving the fundamentals of individual players,
improve skills, work on team concepts, and practice offensive & defensive formations. In addition to this, the
core purpose of all drills is to improve the conditioning of players.
Drills are the secret to performing well in games. If your players have been drilled the right way, at the right
times, and in the right amount, they'll be ready to execute come gametime. Basketball Coaching Drills should be
implemented in the following general order:
1) Conditioning Drills: Get them in shape. Make sure they can run, jump & sprint to the equivalent of
atleast two full games. This way, one full game will seem easy to them and they'll be fresh in the 4th quarter.
2) Individual Skills: These drills help them develop basic fundamental skills such as basic ball-handling,
shooting technique, defensive slides, low-post moves, etc.
3) Team Concepts: Introduce drills that involve 2-4 players, working on their individual skills while passing
the ball around and running some simple patterns.
4) Offensive & Defensive Formations: These drills combine all 3 of the above categories, and adds the
offensive & defensive sets that the coach designed. Although they are the most challenging, these drills
simulate game conditions and challenge the players to perform their best.
Before executing any drill, make sure that you demonstrate it properly and fully explain it to your players.
They'll gain confidence by understanding the drills, know the reason behind doing them, and learn it well the first
time so mistakes can be minimized.
The coach should have a core set of drills that are used in most practices, but to add some variety, there
should be some new drills introduced every week. These serve as a change of pace in the daily routine, helping the
players stay interested and motivated. Otherwise, doing the same thing day in and day out can cause boredom.
The most important thing to keep in mind when implementing basketball coaching drills are:
1) Each drill should be executed at perfect technique. Speed is secondary to technique. The 1st step is to
demand crystal clear execution.
2) Simulate game speeds. After proper technique is learned, the drills should be done at game-speed or above
game-speed so the players cna be fully prepared.
3) Increase competitiveness. This can be done by offering incentives and punishments for correct/incorrect
execution. Also, challenge each player to perform the drills better and better each day, call out those who are
doing really well, and encourage others to outperform them.
Now that you know the basics of choosing and implementing basketball coaching drills, its time to look at some
